Interview Tips | Secure that Dream Job!

Interview Tips | Secure that Dream Job!

Interviews can be very daunting, I get you. Being interviewed for a job you really want, with industry leaders can be quite nerve-wracking. So here are a couple of our tips and tricks I’ve learned from my experiences that can assist you in your next interview!

1. Prepare!

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

An easy task you can do prior to these interviews is to take a visit to the company’s website. Skimming through to understand who they are, what they do, where they are, gives you a better understanding of what sort of business you are getting yourself into. Conduct your own reference checks or reach out to your personal network who may be connected with with the interviewer. Through your own preparation, you can make your own judgement and see if the company’s values and mission aligns with your personal aspirations. Often, during preparation, you can ascertain whether you can see yourself growing, developing, or even help transform the company.

Reading through your roles and responsibilities of previous experience and skills, gives you a refresher and an idea of what you are capable of and what you can bring to the table. This is to back yourself and reassure with the interviewer that you are the best fit for this position. Any curve-ball questions they throw at you, you can bounce back with considered answers.

2. Presentation!

Fun Fact: It is said that you have between 5-60 seconds to make an impression in a job interview. So, first impressions are everything and they start right from when you walk through the door meeting the interviewer.

Being well groomed in business attire and personal hygiene will play well in your first impression. Smile and confidently enter the room, standing up straight and giving a firm handshake are also small details that will help. Wearing nice presentable clothing and being mindful of scent of smell, gives the impression that you are organised and that you really care about the position. The following suggested items can help boost your presentation:

  • Polo Shirt/Button-Up Shirt (Short OR Long Sleeve)
  • Dress Pants
  • Clean White Shoes or Dress Shoes
  • Coat (Not Mandatory)

3. The Interview!

It’s always important to ask questions, as it evaluates if this is a company you want to progress in.  Using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action & Result) method is a good way to structure your response around. Here are some examples of common interview questions. Take a read of each one and brief yourself with a response before the interview.

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Describe your ideal role
  • What are your immediate objectives?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What interests you in the position/our company
  • What do you know about our company?
  • How does your skills and experiences contribute to fulfilling the responsibilities of our vacancy?
  • How would your boss describe your job performance?
  • What is your most significant achievement?

4. Closing the Interview!

The interview usually closes with you being asked if you have any questions. It is always beneficial for you to ask questions as it shows you are keen and have an interest in the role or company. Here are some questions for you to ask your interviewer regarding the position.

  • What is the induction and training program?
  • What style of person has done well in the role?
  • What are the company’s future growth plans?
  • How would you describe the culture of the company?
  • Why is the position available?
  • Does the company have any concerns about your skills and experiences?
  • Are there any competencies that the interviewer would like you to further elaborate on?
  • What will be the next step?

These tips should help you with doing well in your interview and hopefully aid you in securing that next dream role!
